De volgende ochtend kwamen we om 8:30 aan in Hue. Naar omstandigheden hadden we allebei redelijk geslapen. We kwamen meteen de Zweedse dames tegen uit de bus en die raadden ons het hotel aan waarin zij sliepen. We besloten een kijkje te nemen. Het zag er prima uit en kostte ons na onderhandelen maar 5 dollar. Eerst even een fatsoenlijk ontbijt bij de Franse boulangerie om de hoek en daarna een guesthouse zoeken in Hoi An. We hadden begrepen dat het met Tet nogal vol kan lopen dus was vooraf boeken vereist. Na wat adresjes te hebben opgedaan hebben we het oude imperialistische centrum van Hue bekeken. Een complex opgezet door keizer Gai Long in 1804, wat vroeger schitterend mooi moet zijn geweest. De gebouwen die nog overeind staan na de bombardementen in de oorlog, zien er behoorlijk goed uit. Er is een tempel waarin alle 9 keizers worden geeerd die de dynastie van de Vietnamezen vormen. Tussen de oude gebouwen in Chinese stijl staan ook wat later gebouwde east meets west gebouwen waarin je duidelijk de franse stijl terugziet. Toen wisten ze nog hoe je indrukwekkende, kleurrijke architectuur bouwde.
Het weer is iets minder koud dan Hanoi maar nog steeds grijs en regen. Nu onze lange broeken in de was zitten hebben we meerdere korte broeken en t-shirts aan tegen de kou. We hebben begrepen dat Hoi An wel zon moet hebben omdat die achter een bergpas zit die de wolken tegenhoudt(?). We zullen het merken.Maandag 4 februari
Nadat we er de vorige avond al om 9 uur in lagen, zou de wekker om 5:45 moeten gaan voor een onvervalste toeristische busexcursie naar de De-Militerized Zone (DMZ). De wekker ging niet en we werden zelf om 6:15 wakker. Toch lukte het ons 15 minuten later beneden klaar te staan om opgehaald te worden, wat gelukkig ook nog gebeurde. De DMZ was het gebied waar tussen 1962 en 1964 geen militaire activiteit gedoogd was. Het was de grens tussen het Franse, democratische zuiden en het Vietnamese, communistische noorden van Ho Chi Minh. Integendeel tot wat de naam zegt was hier volop militaire activiteit. De Amerikanen bombardeerden het met B-52’s en de Vietnamezen probeerden de Amerikanen aan de anderen kant aan te vallen en de Vietcong te voorzien van wapens. Door al deze activiteit moesten de mensen die hier woonden een schuilplaats zoeken. Het dorp is namelijk helemaal platgebombardeerd .
De schuilplaatsen werden de Vinh Moch tunnels. Hierin leefden 300 mensen en zijn 17 kinderen geboren. Als er geen bombardementen waren leefden ze buiten om het land te bewerken en te vissen. Bukken dus toen we daar doorheen liepen. Er was een kraamafdeling, meeting room, schuilgangen en keukens. Ze hadden drie dieptes gegraven eerst 12 meter. Maar omdat de bommen soms wel gaten van 15 meter diep konden slaan, werden er ook gangen op 15 en 23 meter diep gegraven. Het was een indrukwekkend staaltje menselijke overlevingskracht.
Ondanks veel hulp van Amerika, Duitsland en de UK zijn er nog veel landmijnen aanwezig in de DMZ zone. Vanaf 1975 zijn er als gevolg van de mijnen 5000 dodelijke slachtoffers gevallen en dit gebeurt nog elke dag. Direct na de oorlog zijn er een hoop vervormde babies geboren, de oorzaak hiervan ligt bij de door de Amerikanen gebruikte chemicalien (napalm) om het DMZ gebied te ontbossen.De tour duurde de hele dag en onderweg kwamen we Lotte (van de busreis) nog tegen. ’s Avonds bij een steengoede indier gegeten en wederom op tijd naar bed.

Na weer eens ouderwets uitslapen gingen we ontbijten en op het internet orienteren op mooie pakken en andere outfits. Om 14:00 pakten we namelijk de bus naar Hoi An, het Vietnamese mekka voor maatkleding.

Ik vind trouwens dat ze het geld moeten afschaffen in deze wereld. Laten we beginnen bij Vietnam. Ik ken iemand die het geheel met mij eens is.
Wel heel boeiend dat jullie in de de-militerized zone zijn geweest en in de tunnels.
Toch nog even een rectivicatie: dat spul waarover je praat is geen napalm, maar het onbladeringsmiddel ‘Agent Orange’ o.a. gefabriceerd in onze achtertuin bij Philips Dufar in de jaren zestig.
