Na een flinke busreis van 24 uur kwamen we gelukkig in het centrum aan van Ho Chi Min City (beter bekend als Saigon). Aan ons de schone taak om na deze uitputtingsslag een guesthouse te vinden. Uiteindelijk kwamen we, door een labyrint van kleine smalle straatjes, bij guesthouse Thuan Duc aan. Voor iets minder dan $10 konden we onze hoofdjes laten rusten, prima!
Vrijdag 15 februari
Van te voren hadden we ons verdiept in de verschillende musea in Saigon en we besloten om in ieder geval het Reunification paleis te bezoeken. Het bleek een flinke loop te zijn waarbij we veel drukke wegen moesten oversteken,wat een uitdaging! Vlak voor het Reunification paleis kwamen we het theater tegen waarin dagelijks een optreden van de water puppet show is te bezoeken. De Amerikaanse Denise (uit Laos) vertelde ons destijds dat we als we de kans kregen echt een bezoek aan deze show moesten brengen want het was volgens haar hilarisch. Met dit in ons achterhoofd en een kort overleg besloten we om kaarten te kopen voor de avondvoorstelling.
Aangekomen bij het Reunification paleis stonden er twee tanks te pronken ( van russiche en chinese makelij). Dit waren de twee tanks die op 30 april 1975 door de hekken van het paleis opreden . Het symbool van de Zuid Vietnamese regering en het einde van de zuid Vietnamese republiek.. Nadat de onderhandelingen tussen de communisten van Noord en Zuid Vietnam succesvol waren benoemde het provinciale bestuur van de zuid Vietnamese republiek het paleis: reunifaction palace (voorheen presidential palace). Mocht je meer informatie willen lezen over de historie en de gebeurtenissen omtrent deze strategische plek gedurende de Vietnam oorlog bezoek dan deze pagina.
Het interieur van het paleis, daterend uit de jaren zestig, is nog in originele staat te bewonderen. Erg bijzonder was met name de commandopost in de kelder van het paleis. Hier was nog goed te zien welke strategische gevechten ten tijde van de oorlog plaatsvonden en hoe Amerika steeds verder werd teruggedreven. Na de rondleiding (door een erg snel en gebrekkig sprekende Vietnamees) hebben we nog een video bekeken over de Vietnamese oorlog. Ook dit was erg indrukwekkend.
Na het serieuze werk was het tijd voor ontspanning: eerst wat eten en daarna om 18:30 naar de water Puppet show. Denise had inderdaad gelijk want het was erg grappig om de waterpuppet show mee te maken. Het podium is voorzien van een grote bak met water en daarom heen zitten de muzikanten die tevens het verhaal in het Vietnamees vertellen. De poppen zelf worden bestuurd door een aantal mensen achter “de schermen” . De stukken die door de muzikanten en de poppenbestuurders worden gespeeld zijn klassieke verhalen zoals: het verbouwen van rijst, het vangen van vis en uiteraard de liefde. Zaterdag 16 februari
In Hanoi hadden we al veel kunst gallerijen bekeken en ook in Saigon waren ze weer aanwezig. Ondanks dat we al heel wat geshopt hadden in Hoian wilden we toch ook graag wat kunst naar huis sturen. Vandaag gingen we op kunstjacht (leuk he!). Uiteindelijk hadden we bij èèn zaak het beste gevoel en hebben we een aantal schilderijen laten maken voor een goede prijs. We zijn hier nu zo bedreven in dat we flinke bedragen weten af dingen op een leuke manier. Zo hebben we de volgende tactieken de laatste drie weken gebruikt:
- Uiterst moeilijk kijken wanneer ze het openingsbod doen met de rekenmachine
- Haal ten minste 50 procent van de prijs af en blijf deze voorlopig tijdens de onderhandeling in de rekenmachine indrukken. Net zo lang totdat de verkoper boos wordt. Dan weet je de echte verkoopprijs en koop je het produkt bij de buren ;
- Altijd blijven lachen (waar kennen we die van..) tijdens de onderhandelingen;
- Zeg dat je een arme student bent die zo’n hoog bedrag echt niet kan betalen hoe goedkoop het ook is;
- Geef aan dat je allebei “happy” wilt zijn over de prijs: “you happy me happy”. En dat jezelf echt niet “happy” van de prijs wordt;
- Vraag aan je partner openlijk wat deze van de prijs vindt, en kraak de prijs vervolgens keihard af;
- Wees geduldig, hoe langer je wacht hoe meer er van de prijs afgaat;
- En de altijd werkende tactiek is het weglopen om vervolgens een schreeuwende verkoper achter je aan te krijgen die het product alsnog voor jouw prijs wilt verpatsen.
Maar goed, in Hoian kwamen het schilderij van (Super) Bono tegen en hadden we er toendertijd een foto van gemaakt. Omdat we het zo’n gaaf schilderij vonden hebben we deze na laten maken!! Check de foto! Hij is mooi geworden he!
Die middag zijn we nog door Saigon gelopen. Wat een ongeloofelijk grote stad en wat ongeloofelijk veel verkeer. Het kwam echt overal vandaan,net zoals in Hanoi maar dan nog veel erger.Als je overstak dan kwamen er rijen brommers op je af. Zie het filmpje!
S’avonds hebben we gegeten bij de grooitste markt van Saigon. Het eten was lekker en we hadden een gesprek met een Vietnamees echtpaar die in Australië woonde.
Zondag en Maandag 17/18 februari
Vrijdag hadden we een tour geboekt voor de Mekong Delta. Het werd uiteindelijk een standaard tour omdat we de tour die we in gedachte hadden, een mountainbike trek door de Mekong delta, erg duur zou gaan uitvallen namelijk 250 dollar per persoon.
We werden om 07.30 uur verwacht bij het reisbureau waar we de tour hadden geboekt. Zondagochtend rinkelde onze wekker (telefoon) en Martijn merkte op dat het erg licht was voor 6.15 uur. Na het bekijken van de tijd op de telefoon was het inderdaad erg licht voor 06.15 uur, het was namelijk 07:22 uur. %&#!@$*^% kwam er uit onze monden. Gelukkig hadden we de avond ervoor al de hotelkamer betaald en onze spullen ingepakt. Vijftien minuten later aangekomen bij ons reisbureau stonden ze gelukkig nog op ons te wachten en konden dus nog mee.
De tour zelf behelsde de volgende activiteiten: busreis naar de Mekong, het bezoeken van een coconutfarm, fishfarm, rijstfarm, floating market, minorityvillage verdeeld over twee dagen waarbij de overnachting plaatsvindt op een boot. Dit gecombineerd met hordes toeristen zorgt ervoor dat het woord massatoerisme wel een goede omschrijving is. Leuk was het dan ook zeker niet en we wilden allebei op de eerste dag al weer naar Saigon. Maar goed, we hebben ook hier weer van geleerd zullen we maar zeggen. Toch willen we je niet een aantal prachtfoto’s onthouden:

Gelukkig betaal je hier in Nederland gewoon de vraagprijs. Moet er niet aan denken dat 450 leden gaan afdingen voor de contributie. Alhoewel ik nu al scheldend achter bepaalde leden aanren.
Zo zo zo, weer een hoop, gezien en beleefd.
Wat een drukte daar in Han tong pan en Hong chin kai.
Mooi portretschilderij van je Tinus. Vooral dat lange haar. Geeft niets hoor: Superman is ook mijn jeugdheld. Geukkig geen shirt van de club uit R.
Leuk trouwens dat jullie kleding hebben gekocht voor straks. Ziet er netjes uit.
Overigens leven wij met jullie mee, want wij eten iedere dag vietnamese loempia’s voor 1 euro per 10.
Ps. Willen jullie op de terugweg naar Nederland een paar brownies voor mij meenemen. Als ik jullie verslag lees krijg ik namelijk een hongergevoel.

Zeker dat weglopen ga ik uitproberen. Volgens mij valt de tegenpartij van schrik van z’n stoel Maar ‘what the hell’ als het werkt…..
Leuke verhalen, goede foto’s, maar nu lees ik dat iedereen ‘filmpjes’ gaat kijken en ik kan natuurlijk weer niets vinden. Nu weet ik wel dat ik andere kwaliteiten heb, maar toch zou ik het leuk vinden als ik ze ook kan zien. Hier hebben jullie vast ook een goede tip voor.
