Daarnaast heeft het een oneindige diversiteit aan koraal. Je begrijpt het al, Pulau Sipadan wordt als een van de beste duikplekken ter wereld beschouwd. De helderheid van het water liep uit een van 10 tot 25 meter en onze gemiddelde duiktijd was rond de 45 minuten, ondanks dat we nog genoeg bar (+60) overhadden :-(. Carolien had nog wat ongeluk tijdens haar duiken want haar ademinstrument was stuk en bij een andere duik verloor ze haar riem met gewichten waardoor ze na beide keren kort te hebben afgedaald weer even naar boven moest.
Maar het was het allemaal waard! Wat was het mooi en wat hebben we genoten: De eerste dag was een beetje bewolkt en de reis met de speedboot duurde een uurtje. Onderweg zagen we veel huisjes op palen midden in de zee. Kleine nederzettingen. We hadden er ontzettend veel zin in, Pulau Sipadan zelf (het eiland) was alles wat je van een paradijseiland mag verwachten en meer. Witte poederzachte stranden en blauwgroen, superhelder water zoals je dat alleen uit sommige zwembaden / spa’s kent. Op het eiland liepen gigantische hagedissen rond (die geen kwaad deden), krabbetjes die in schelpen wonen en er werden schildpad eieren gebroed. Het koraal en de vissen waren al vanuit de boot goed te zien en we konden niet wachten om te beginnen.
De eerste duik viel enigzins tegen. Het zicht was niet al te best en er waren niet veel vissen. We waren natuurlijk wel een beetje verwend met de similan islands en het wrakduiken bij kao lak maar Sipadan zou nog ondrukwekkender moeten zijn. Gelukkig werd dit tijdens de tweede duik helemaal weggenomen toen we onze eerste schilpadden en white-tip sharks zagen. De absolute topper was de tweede duik van dag twee bij de ‘drop off’, de zon scheen vollop en daardoor leek het soms een lichtshow onder water, heel gaaf. Toen we net onder water waren gingen we eerst een stukje turtle tomb in, dit is een gang die 40 meter lang is en leidt naar het hart van het eiland. Daar aangekomen zijn er veel verschillende gangen waar je verder in kan zwemmen en veel schildpadden gaan erin maar komen er nooit meer uit, vandaar de naam. Als je vanaf daar de zee in keek zag je de vissen zwemmen in een prachtige, mysterieuze blauwe gloed. Wat verder kwamen we een hele school zilveren big-eyed trevally tegen, dat gezien tegen de zon die in het water scheen was fantastisch. Het koraal was prachtig en de kleuren helder door het goede licht. We kwamen weer white-tip sharks tegen en giant trevally (die zijn echt groot). Maar de slagroom op de taart waren de tientallen schildpadden die we overal om ons heen zagen zwemmen! We zwommen met ze op en keken ze diep in de ogen, wauw!
Op de heenweg van de tweede dag hadden we al dolfijnen zien zwemmen en op de terugweg zagen we een vliegende vis vlak naast de boot opstijgen en wegstuiven. Deze duikplaats kon voor ons niet meer stuk. Wat wel opviel was dat het meeste leven zich vrij hoog aan de oppervlakte bevond dus we kunnen iedereen ook zeker aanbevelen te gaan snorkelen. Al was het alleen al om de schilpadden te zien die altijd adem komen halen aan de oppervlakte en vaak tussen het koraal dobberen (zie filmpje).
