See you in Shanghai!
De bootreis van Osaka naar Shanghai duurde 2 dagen en was superrelaxed. We hadden een prima 4-persoons kamer en deelden deze met 2 jonge Japanse studenten. We brachten de tijd door met slapen, kaarten en China plannen. Het eten was prima en het verschil tussen de Japanners en Chinezen overduidelijk. De ene bescheiden en verlegen de andere luid slurpend, smakkend en vooral schreeuwend. Een potje kaarten ging gepaard met veel kreten over en weer en gezichten op onweer. Leuk om te zien, onmogelijk om je bij te concentreren. We vaarden Japan uit tussen allemaal eilanden door en hadden eigenlijk constant boten om ons heen. We voeren duidelijk op een drukke waterweg. Gelukkig was de zee erg rustig en hebben we de anti-zeeziek pillen niet hoeven te gebruiken.
Onze eerste kennismaking met Shanghai was de immense haven. Met de boot vaarden we de Huangpu rivier over richting de aanmeerplek. We stonden inmiddels boven op het dek om van de naderende skyline foto’s te maken. Wat we eerst dachten dat mist was bleek dikke, dikke smog te zijn die meteen op je longen sloeg. We konden nog geen 500 meter(!) ver kijken. Na vijf minuten hielden we het voor gezien en gingen we onze kajuit weer in.
Zondag
Eenmaal aangemeerd vlakbij het centrum van Shanghai duurde het even voordat we de boot ook echt uit mochten. Er stonden een hoop politieagenten beneden om ervoor te zorgen dat niemand hem smeerde? We werden de bus in gewerkt (waarbij de Chinezen er natuurlijk allemaal voor zorgden als eerste binnen te zijn). Na door alle doune en twee x-ray machines gecheckt te zijn liepen we door een soort parkeergarage uitgang officieel China binnen. We pakten de taxi naar het hostel dat we online voor Arjan en ons hadden geboekt. Arjan bleek net ingecheckt te hebben en lag te pitten op de kamer.
Na mail checken en bijkletsen onder het genot van een koud Chinees biertje (60 cent voor een halve liter!) verkenden we de omgeving en probeerden we ons eerste Chinese gerecht: dumplings en noodlesoep. Het beviel allemaal prima! Arjan had een echte Spaanse delicatesse meegenomen en alvast een voorproefje van een weekje Spanje: Rioja, geitenkaas en jamon (gedroogde ham). Dit maakt we soldaat tijdens een paar potjes Skip-bo (dat moest Arjan natuurlijk meteen leren). Met volle magen vertrokken we naar Nanjing road, de hoofdstraat, om de neonlichten te bekijken. Erg indrukwekkend!
Als toetje na ons Spaanse tapas diner genoten we nog van een veel te dure ijstoren bij Haagen dasz.
De fake market
Nog moe van de jetlag deden we een dagje rustig aan. We gingen bekijken waar China expert in is: het kopieeren van alles! In dit geval tassen, schoenen, horloges en nog veel meer van allerlei bekende merken. Daarnaast was het weer niet om over naar huis te schrijven (maar we doen het toch 
het regende dat het goot. De vorige avond op Nanjing road werden we al constant benaderd door mannetjes met ‘bag? Watsj? Dvd? En dat was even buiten het gebouw dat erom bekend staat nepspullen te verkopen niet anders. Eenmaal binnen probeerde iedereen ons de winkel in te krijgen. Al gauw begon de eerst afdingsessie. We hadden begrepen dat de prijs hier zo’n 20 keer over de kop ging bij het openingsbod en dat leek zo ongeveer wel te kloppen. Toen bleek hoeveel er van de prijs af kon was de jacht geopend en gingen we op zoek naar souvenirs. Arjan wilde graag naar een mooi horloge kijken. Dit begon voor in de winkel maar al gauw werden we uitgenodigd naar een ’secret room’ achter de polyester badjassen. Daar bevond zich een collectie echte neppers van grote merken. Het over en weer bieden begon en de prijs bleef maar zakken.
De Chinezen hielden er duidelijk iets meer gerafineerd onderhandelingstechnieken op na. Als we een lage prijs boden werd er gewezen op een handvat of stukje van het artikel en gezegd dat je daar alleen dat voor kon kopen. Ook konden ze het zelf nooit voor die prijs inkopen en was het superkwaliteit… Jaja toen de dame onze prijs niet wilde benaderen liepen we weg en bood ze op de valreep nog een behoorlijk lage prijs (14 euro voor een echte nep Tag Heuer). Arjan zag dat wel zitten en ging ervoor. Zelfs als je alleen de prijs wilde weten en vervolgens keek hoe laag deze kon door een absurd laag bedrag tegen te bieden kon je zomaar weglopen met iets wat je eigenlijk niet eens wilde hebben omdat ze het bod uiteindelijk accepteerden. Oeps! Uitkijken geblazen dus. Er waren geen shoppende Chinezen te bekennen, alleen westerlingen en (schaam schaam) een groot deel ervan was Nederlands. Men liep met flinke nieuwe nepkoffers vol met versgeshopte nepwaar. We konden ons voorstellen dat de verleiding erg groot is als je bijna huiswaarts gaat. De winkeliers hadden zo hun tactieken om je binnen te lokken en spraken allemaal ontzettend goed Engels (1 zelf een beetje Nederlands) maar een vriendelijk ‘no thank you’ of ‘I am not really a bagperson’ was voldoende om ze af te wimpelen. Toen de mannen naar schoenen zaten te kijken en Carolien even op een krukje zat te wachten bleek waarom alle topneppers in achterkamertjes (soms letterlijk achter een kast die ook fungeerde als deur) werden bewaard. De Chinezen werden ineens allemaal ontzettend actief en dozen met horloges werden snel weggehaald toen er drie mannen in wit en blauw met pet langskwamen. Waarschijnlijk een soort inspectiedienst. Al begrijpen we nog steeds niet waarom alles snel weg moest, in China kennen ze toch geen copyright?
Na dit shopavontuur deden we een poging het Shanghai museum te bezoeken maar het was al best laat en er stond zo’n lange rij dat we dat voor gezien hielden. We kochten nog wel een paar paraplu’s voor 1 euro maar al gauw bleek de Chinese makeladij: na 1 keer open en dicht waren de plu’s van Martijn en Carolien al 1 dopje kwijt. We waren op tijd terug in het hostel en keken daar een leuke film: whatever happens in Vegas..
Dinsdag
Weer regen maar daar lieten we ons niet door tegenhouden. Het oude French concession centre stond op ons programma. Vol met leuke smalle straatjes en mooie oude villa’s. Onderweg bezochten we het Okura Hotel die bekend staat om haar art deco stijl. Daar bleken we naar de 35ste verdieping te kunnen voor het uitzicht. Dat was indrukwekkend. Niet dat je ver kon kijken of hele mooie gebouwen zag maar de hoeveelheid hoogbouw was schokkend.
Daarna op naar Shanghai museum. De entree was gratis (mazzeltje) en de exibities indrukwekkend. De Chinese historie gaat terug tot lang voor Christus en er stonden dan ook spullen in van meer dan 2000 jaar oud maar wel in topconditie (of zou dat ook nep zijn). Het mooiste vonden we de dansmaskers van de Tibetaanse monniken en outfits van de Chinese minderheden. Natuurlijk misten ook de vazen van de Ming dynastie en papierrollen met kaligrafie en tekeningen niet.
Toen was het weer tijd voor het leren van een nieuw kaartspel en speelden we ‘estimation’ onder het genot van mooi uitzicht, een hapje en een drankje bij Babela. Die avond hebben we ons reisplan voor China verder in elkaar gedraaid.
Woensdag
De laatste dag Shanghai en het weer was super. Eindelijk zon en door alle regen was de smog behoorlijk opgetrokken. We konden zowaar wat stukjes blauwe lucht zien. Eerst vertrokken we naar treinstation om een kaartje te kopen voor de volgende bestemming. Dat ging vrij gemakkelijk. De taxi’s zijn hier zo goedkoop dat dit een ideale manier van transporteren is. Vanaf het treinstation pakten we een taxi naar de Bund een strip mooie oude gebouwen aan de rivier. Vanaf hier heb je een mooi uitzicht over Pudong, de futuristische skyline van Shanghai. Die was nu eindelijk duidelijk te zien. Het stuk wat bekend staat als ‘the old town’ lijkt voor een westerling gek genoeg een beetje op chinatown in een westers land. Maar was desondanks toch wel charmant.
s’Avonds liepen we terug naar de bund om te genieten van de Pudong skyline bij nacht. Hier de foto’s met smog, zonder smog en bij nacht:

Arie en ik zijn onze eigen wereldreis aan het maken in Italië en komen twee of drie dagen later dan jullie in Nederland aan… Tot dan! Ik kijk er naar uit.

Mijn ouders zijn vorig jaar naar China geweest met de rugzak (nog steeds stoer). Vonden het ook helemaal facinerend en geweldig. De steden overwhelming en het platteland ontroerend. Geniet geniet geniet wat gaat de tijd nu snel………….
