Tokyo here we come!
De reis naar Japan begon zaterdag 24 mei voor ons al vroeg. We hadden onze trouwe reiswekker gezet op 05.00 uur, genoeg tijd om te ontbijten en onze vlucht te halen. We werden om 04.00 uur gewekt door de wekker van het hotel, een uur te vroeg. We zetten de wekker uit en sliepen nog een kostbaar uurtje door. Onze eigen trouwe reiswekker blies zijn hoorn om 05.00 uur. Het hotel bevond zich dichtbij de airport en met de gratis shuttle stonden we zo bij de incheckbalie van Air New Zealand. Deze keer hadden we geluk en kregen we, na verzoek, stoelen toegewezen bij de nooduitgang. Relaxed, want de vlucht duurde maar liefst tien uur. In het vliegtuig bleek dat iedereen zijn eigen tv scherm had en een hoop keuze aan entertainment. We hebben aardig wat films bekeken tijdens het vliegen (5!).
Ondanks dat de tijd voorbij vloog 
waren we erg moe toen we in Tokyo aankwamen. Gelukkig hadden we een hostel van te voren geboekt en bij het informatiepunt vroegen we de medewerkster hoe we er te komen. We pakten op advies de trein en die deed er ongeveer anderhalf uur over om bij ons station Ikebukuro te komen. Ongelooflijk he, maar Tokyo is dan ook zo groot! In Tokyo stad wonen er 8 miljoen mensen en in Tokyo district maar liefst 80 miljoen! Ondertussen keken we vermoeid uit de treinramen naar de neon die zo nu en dan voorbij kwamen, onze ogen vielen af en toe dicht. Gelukkig lagen we niet lang daarna in ons bed bij het guesthouse.
De Tokyo experience!
Tokyo is een van de steden die je in je leven een keer bezocht moet hebben. De verwachtingen waren dan ook hooggespannen; Hi-tec, supersonisch, ultramobiel, overcrowded en peperduur. Op sommige punten klopte dit maar waar je het niet verwacht bleek het ook totaal anders, lees gauw verder!
Wat een stad! Hierbij is Amsterdam officieel gedoopt tot een DORP! Neem dan het metrostelsel. Dat is pas een ‘underground’! Zo’n stad verdient het niet om binnen een dag door heen te jekkeren en dat is precies wat we NIET gedaan hebben. Elk district (lees:de grotere stops op de metrokaart) is een stad op zich, we zijn achtereenvolgens naar de plekken Ikebukuro , Akihabara, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Omote-sando, Rappongi en Asakusa geweest. Kris Kras door Tokyo!
En wat een geweldige inwoners, niet alleen het aantal maar ook hoe ze er bij lopen en zich gedragen. De mannen lopen voornamelijk in pak, de jongens superhip en de vrouwen zijn ultiem gestyled met de laatste modeassecoires, nieuwe haarlooks en hun Louis Vouton tasjes. Je vraagt je haast af of ze elke dag door een persoonlijke stylist worden bijgestaan, gefohnd en gestyled. Echt niemand heeft afgetrapte schoenen, afgedragen kleren of futloos haar :-s. Dit viel helemaal op in Omote-sando, waar de hipste winkeltjes zitten. Daar liepen de meisjes er echt bij in de coolste outfits (echt alles klopt, zonder dat ze wannabees lijken) maar ook babydolls en iets wat lijkt op een jodelkostuum maar dat waarschijnlijk een outfit van een favoriete mangastripfiguur is. Een feest om naar te kijken. Dat mag in Nederland ook wel wat meer. Bij de metro staan ze netjes in de rij te wachten (die op de grond zijn gemarkeerd) en op de roltrap staan ze keurig aan een kant zodat je er langs kunt lopen.
In de avond transformeert Tokyo zich tot een waar lichtspektakel met al haar neonreclame. De gekste reclameberichten kom je tegen in de mooiste knalkleuren. Vooral bij het Shinjuku dstrict.
Tussen zes en zeven reizen de forenzen na het werk richting de suburbs of Tokyo stad. De japanners werken, als je het vergelijkt met het Westen, meer uren per week en elke minuut moet functioneel worden ingevuld. Dit levert uiteraard de nodige werkdruk op wat afgereagereerd wordt in de diverse arcade hallen. Je staat dan ook gek te kijken als je vrouwen in mantelpak ziet schieten met een mitrallieur en mannen op leeftijd in pak ziet digitaal gitaarspelen of dj-en.
En dan het beste van allemaal, het is zo goedkoop! We hebben de XE converter er meerdere keren op gecheckt maar een bakje sushi kost 1,80, een cappucino 1,50 en avondeten niet meer dan 6 euro. Ik weet niet wie het in de wereld heeft geslingerd dat Japan zo duur is, maar dat moet voor de intreding van de euro geweest zijn. Nederland is in alles maar dan ook alles veel duurder. Voor het geld hoef je het dus niet te laten beste lezers! Voor ongeveer 40 euro per persoon per dag kom je makkelijk rond. Dat de meeste attracties gratis zijn scheelt ook. Zondag zijn we in de omgeving (Ikebukuro) van ons guesthouse gebleven en zijn we naar een aantal electronicazaken geweest om de nieuwste gadgets te bekijken en op zoek te gaan voor een zoomlens voor Carolien haar spiegelreflexcamera. Wat een drukte! En wat is nu de prijs? Het was allemaal erg lastig om erachter te komen maar uiteindelijk kwamen we er wel. In elke winkel die je binnenkomt word je welkom geheten (in koor) er wordt veel gebogen en als je terugbuigt, buigen ze meteen weer terug, iets waar af en toe natuurlijk stiekem misbruik van wordt gemaakt ;-).
De Tsukji vismarktDe dag begon vroeg, om vijf uur gingen we eruit. Carolien was al aangekleed en al toen Martijn zijn jongensdorm uit kwam. Ze had een halve gare op de kamer die pas om vier uur s’ochtends naar bed ging. Iets wat blijkbaar 30 minuten moest duren en met veel kabaal en licht gepaard ging. De vorige nacht was ze ook al wakker geworden maar zo ver weg dat ze het niet kon plaatsen. Toen Carolien vroeg of de dame in kwestie soms aan het inpakken was om te gaan, werd er defensief gereageerd dat ze soms pas om zes uur ging slapen.
De lijkwitte Poolse die alleen maar vitaminepillen en proteinepap at, had ze echt niet allemaal op een rijtje. Ze verbleef er blijkbaar al vijf weken en de rest van de vaste crew: twee Turken, twee Engelsen en een doofstomme (ja het was echt een apart zooitje bij elkaar) had een beetje een hekel aan haar. Na nog een gebroken nacht besloot Carolien de laatste nacht maar op de jongensdorm te slapen, de boodschap kwam gewoon niet over. Maar ja terug naar het verhaal.
De bekendste toeristenatrractie van Tokyo is toch wel de Tsukji vismarkt. Hier verkopen ze alle vis en schelpdieren die je maar kunt bedenken. Met als specialiteit toch wel de blauwe tonijn, die per stuk tussen de 5.000 en 10.000 euro opbrengt. BIG BUSINESS dus en de viskarretjes reden af en aan. Hier was de sushi zo vers, dat je bijna niet kon proeven dat het vis was. Dat moesten we natuurlijk proberen. Het smaakte delicieux en dankzij een aantal Amerikaanse toeristen die hun bier niet opkonden zaten we om 7:45 al aan het Japanse bier. Weer een record gevestigd.
Japan staat bij ons natuurlijk, buiten de sushi, bekend om haar auto’s en je ziet hier dan ook types rijden van Honda, Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Mazda, Daihatsu en Mitsubischi die we nooit eerder hebben gezien:
Met zoveel auto’s en zo weinig ruimte moet je creatief zijn met parkeren en dat zijn ze dan ook. De stad staat vol met machines waar je je auto in zet en die hem dan volautomatisch, alsof het om een kopje koffie gaat, naar de juiste plek beweegt. Deze parkeerplekken worden betaald door de baas. De Japanners worden goed betaald en het leven is goedkoop, vind je het gek dat ze zo ontzettend kunnen spenderen. Ook tanken gaat hier anders dan thuis, zie foto.
Ze zijn niet alleen automobiel. Ze zijn gek van openklapbare mobieltjes maar het gekke is, je hoort ze nooit. Ze hebben een duidelijke gedragscode voor mobieltjes, en ringtones en funky smstunes zijn uit. In de trein moet je mobiel uit als je vlakbij de ‘priority seats’ staat (voor ouderen en zwangeren en dergelijke) en wordt je verwacht niet te telefoneren. Als mensen dit dan onverhoopt toch moeten doen gaat de hand voor de mond en gebeurt dat op fluistertoon.
Er is nog iets dat hier anders en erg aangenaam is. Iets wat er voor zorgt dat in de tijd dat je al tien keer kan plassen, handen wassen en je neus poederen, Martijn nog steeds op de wc zit. De bril AKA bilverwarming! En dan denk je dat je die alleen in luxe restaurants of warenhuizen hebt zitten. Maar nee. De eerste keer dat we deze tegenkwamen was nota bene bij de McDonalds! Buiten de warme bril kan je kiezen voor het sproeien van verschillende gebieden waarbij de temperatuur van het water ingesteld kan worden. Als klap op de vuurpijl heb je dan nog het doorspoelgeluid?! Hmm tja de enige reden die wij konden bedenken was een cover up voor discreet scheten… Maar ja we komen dan ook net bij van een maand in de scheetbus.
Na de vismarkt was het pas negen uur. We liepen wat rond bij het nabijgelegen Ginza. Daar zitten alle grote merken met hun winkels. Dat zijn niet zomaar winkels, het hele gebouw is in stijl. Na wat windowshoppen hadden we het wel gezien. Dus we pakten de Metro naar Akihabara, de plek voor goedkope elektronica. Veel tweedehands laptops gespot die uiteindelijk niet veel goedkoper bleken dan in de winkel. Weer heerlijk en voor niets geluncht. Martijn snapte er echt niks van: “Nah, hoe kan dit nou, snap jij het nog?”. Tijdens onze zoektocht naar een park kwamen we een mooie Japanse tempel tegen. Uiteindelijk besloot Martijn dat hij de laptop gewoon in Nederland koopt. We besloten wel een lens te gaan kopen voor de canon camera om in te zoomen.
De tempels..
Japan heeft een rijke cultuur die wordt gekenmerkt door de aanwezigheid van keizers tot en met 1920. We hebben dan ook de meiji-jingu tempel (Shibuya district) bezocht die ter nagedachtenis van de laatste keizer is gebouwd. Shibuya district geweest, meiji-jingu tempel bezocht ter nagedachtenis van de keizer gebouwd. rondgelopen in de tuin. Wat een heerlijke rustgevende sfeer hing daar.
Vervolgens naar Omotosando en Rappongi hills geweest, dit gebied is gebouwd door de grootste vastgoedmagnaat van Japan. (heerlijke ijsje gegeten bij babbi, echt alles is goed en lekker). In de avond zijn we teruggegaan naar Ikebukuro en hebben heerlijk gegeten met ons eigen gasstel… Het was dat de ober Engels sprak, anders hadden we alle ingewanden van de koe besteld (het was een mixplaat), gelukkig kregen we nu kip en varkensvlees om te bakken.
Eten kan je overal en er is een bepaalde, kunstige traditie die Japans spreken overbodig maakt: plastic voorbeelden van het eten dat je serveert in de vitrines. Het is ongelooflijk wat voor mooie creaties je tegenkomt. Deze traditie heeft ervoor gezorgd dat uit eten superpopulair is geworden. Want nu kon iedereen zien wat hij of zij zou eten ook al was het niet Japans.
We waren alleen nog niet in noordoost Tokio geweest, dus dat werd onze bestemming van de woensdag. We pakten de metro naar de ueno markt en hebben heerlijk kebab gegeten en een praatje gemaakt met de Turkse man. Hij kwam uit Instanbul en woonde al weer vier jaar in Tokyo en had het prima naar zijn zin. We bedankte hem voor de uitstekende kebab en zette voet naar de grootste boedhistische tempel (Asakusa district) van Tokyo: de shinto tempel. Ondertussen had Carolien nog even een kimono aangetrokken:

Na een supersonisch voorproefje: de toiletpot, hadden we de grootste supersonische attractie tot het laatst bewaard: de bullettrain! We sloten donderdag ons bezoek aan Tokyo in stijl af en reisde met de bullettrain naar Kyoto (what’s in the letters?). Wat een vette trein! De trein acccelereert razendsnel en binnen no time waren we in Kyoto ( 660 km in 2,5 uur). We namen zichtbaar onder de indruk afscheid van deze trein en gingen vol energie als een bullet naar ons hostel…

Daar is’ie dan tóch carolientje: de kimono…..had ook niet anders verwacht dan dat het je prachtig zou staan….gaat’ie mee naar Holland?
Voor mij is het inderdaad nieuw te horen dat Japan zo’n stuk goedkoper is dan Nederland….en wat een verademing dat al die klotemobieltjes geen ringtones hebben en dat iedereen vanuit innerlijke beschaving snapt hoe je er mee om kunt gaan…over ontwikkeling gesproken…

Enig allemaal, en wat een geweldige ervaring weer.

Lekker ff met elkaar gebabbelt vanmiddag, heerlijk hoor.
Wij waren vanmiddag weer een succes bij de Rugby, helemaal leuk.
En die Smeerjam zeg…. Jeetjemekreetje wat heeft ze prachtig gezongen.
Er werd zelfs nog gevraagd door het publiek of ze het nog een keer wilde zingen als toegift.
Nou zeg..dat is toch echt te gek!
Ze heeft het gedaan ook. Ze doet het echt zo erg geweldig.

Daar staat een plaatje op van de boot waar we dit jaar op zingen.
Hahah, we hebben gewoon het publiek al aan boord.

Wow wat een prachtige verhalen en avonturen weer. Prachtig om de cultuur terug te zien in de foto’s. Ongelovelijk hoe UBER hip de jongere erbij lopen en de hoeveelheid mensen. De drukte overal. GOODNESSS…ik vind de Albert Heijn al druk om zes uur. Lekker eten jam jam jam hoort er natuurlijk ook bij. Prachtig land weer JAPAN, maar euhm ik ben al verliefd op Thailand en Nieuw-Zeeland en Mexico en en en dus meer landen kunnen er niet bij.
